The visual identity can remain the same across editions, but the production file should follow the template for the specific platform, binding and book specification.
Start with the final book specification
Confirm trim size, page count, paper and binding before producing the final print wrap. KDP’s cover calculator generates a template from the selected book details. A change to those details can change the spine and overall dimensions.
The creative direction can be developed earlier. Keep the distinction clear between approving the front-cover design and approving a production file for a particular edition.
Use a separate template for each provider
Do not assume that a KDP wrap can be uploaded unchanged to IngramSpark. Obtain the appropriate template for each edition and check the placement of the front, spine, back and any additional areas against it.
IngramSpark provides its own cover templates and file-creation guidance. A case-bound hardcover or a jacket introduces production areas that a paperback does not have. Reposition artwork and text within the relevant guides rather than stretching the entire cover.
Check the export, not only the layout
Review the provider’s current requirements for the PDF, colour preparation, image quality and fonts. Technical settings belong to the specific production route; a preset remembered from a previous project is not a substitute for checking the current instructions.
Keep an editable master and clearly named exports for each platform and format. That makes it easier to revise a spine after a page-count change without confusing one edition with another.
Review the physical result
Use the available preview and proofing process before publication. Check the spine alignment, back-cover copy and the way important details sit near trimmed or folded edges.
A file accepted by an upload system still deserves a visual review. Discuss proof timing as part of the schedule, especially when releasing several formats together.
